Seward overlooks Resurrection Bay, a svelte finger of the Gulf of Alaska. Framed by rugged peaks and dark spruce forest, the town comprises a pleasantly rustic port of about 2,500 residents, roughly divided into two parts: the relaxed, older downtown and a busy cluster of new development around the small boat harbour a mile north.

The Alaska SeaLife Centre is one of the state’s top museums and research institutions. The centre is devoted to wildlife rehabilitation understanding Alaska’s marine ecosystems, and communicating that understanding to the public.

Large underwater viewing galleries let visitors press their faces against the glass to watch harbour seals and sea lions zip by with astounding speed and grace. In the Discovery Pool, kids can run their fingers over sticky sea anemone tentacles or a sea star’s smooth arms.
