Details / Sitka National Historic Park
The Sitka Town’s premier historic attraction, Sitka National Historical Park was established to commemorate the Battle of Sitka, an 1804 conflict between the Tlingit and the Russians. The park consists of two sties. The Russian Bishop’s House dates back to 1842 and is one of only four original Russian structures remaining in the Western Hemisphere.
The Tlingit Fort Site begins a few blocks from the Russian Bishop’s House, at the end of Lincoln Street. The Visitor Centre and Southeast Alaska Indian Cultural Centre contain artefacts that tell the stories of both cultures before and after the battle. Though few in number; the objects are of high quality. Native artists work at the centre; visitors are encouraged to watch them carve and weave and to talk with tem about their art.
