Details / Southeast Alaska
Southeast Alaska is a remote realm of islands, forests, and mountains. Most people visit to see the stunning scenery and the abundant wildlife, and are pleasantly surprised to find appealing towns and a rich human history.
Southeast Alaska consists of a narrow strip of mainland and thousands of islands bounded by British Columbia and the Coast Mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Only three towns connect to the rest of Alaska by road. The rest of the Southeast is only accessible by air or water, but the plane service is decent and the opportunities to travel by boat are legendary.
Mountains, some rising thousands of meters right out of the sea, seem to tower everywhere. This cool, wet region is covered by temperate rain forest, designated as Tongass National Forest.
Southeast is home to only 60,000 people, also possesses a rich historical and cultural heritage – from the indigenous peoples to the later Russians, Scandinavians, and late nineteenth century gold seekers – that is richly exhibited in excellent museums, art galleries, festivals, and diverse musical offerings.
