Details / Catalina Island
Amazing as it may seem, an island awaits visitors just 22 miles across the sea from Los Angeles County’s sandy shores. Catalina offers a delightful and unexpected alternative, from the small community of Avalon to the untouched interior area and to remote beaches and coves.
The wilderness area is rich with countless species of native plants and over a hundred species of bids, plus boars, goats, and bison.
Catalina is the second largest of the Channel Islands and is home to approximately 3,200 residents. Most visitors and boaties anchor themselves in Avalon. The action is centered along Crescent Avenue boardwalk, the Green Pleasure Pier, and the circular Spanish Moderne Casino.
Non resident vehicles are not allowed, but bicycles and small gasoline-powered carts can be rented for use around Avalon. Those who wish to hike or cycle outside of town require permits from the conservancy, and a number of companies offer bus tours.
