Details / City of Los Angeles Folk Art Museum
Known simply as the Craft & Folk Art Museum when its doors opened in 1965, this former restaurantgallery hit some hard times until City of Los Angeles was added to the front of its title. Now part of a joint venture with the city’s Cultural Affairs Department, the non-profit museum is assured a minimum 10-year life span.
The museum has remained in its beautifully restored 1930s Georgian-style brick building with distinctive yellow awning. Changing displays consist of high-calibre contemporary, historic, and ethnic arts and crafts, from collectible teapots to wearable pieces.
One of the museum’s most popular events, the Festival of Masks, is held in October. The festival hosts a huge neighbourhood parade, where thousands of costumed and masked marchers show off ethnic garb.
