Details / Forest Lawn Memorial Park
Evelyn Waugh’s scathing satire on death, The Loved One, was based on the denial and excesses at Forest Lawn. Set on 300 acres, the cemetery was founded in 1917 by Dr. Hubert Eaton, who envisioned a heavenly park-like setting for those who insisted on pretending to die. Forest Lawn soon became the best place in town to rest eternally. As such, the plots became coveted by celebrities and society’s upper crust.
Prominently placed amid the extravagant landscaping is a plethora of Carrara-marble statuary and divine stained glass. One of he more awesome sight is the grand Resurrection and Crucifixion Hall. Housed within is artist Jan Styka’s “The Crucifixion”, one of the world’s largest religious paintings, measuring 195 by 45 feet; it is unveiled with pomp every hour on the hour.
The cemetery’s museum displays an eclectic range of artefacts such as medieval armour, ancient coins, a gem collection, photos, and illustrations. Also on the ground are two replica English churches and one Scottish church, as well as the Court of David, with a reproduction of Michelangelo’s famous statue.
