Details / Hollywood Forever
Most of the Hollywood maps that claim to pinpoint stars’ homes prove to be inaccurate. A far more reliable map, however, is the one you pick up at the Hollywood Forever flower shop, as all of the celebrities listed are still in residence. Hollywood loves its famous dead people, and most visitors seem as enthralled by the stars’ headstones as they would by their autographs.
The roll call here reads like the A-list at a post-Oscar party, with Rudolph Valentino probably leading in the popularity stakes. Valentino, dashing hero of The Sheik and heart throb of millions, died on peritonitis in 1926 at the age of 31 and was laid out inside the Cathedral Mausoleum. Some 10,000 fans packed the grounds to pay their tributes.
Other familiar names pop up at every turn: Charlie Chaplin Jr., Tyrone Power, Peter Finch, John Huston, Nelson Eddy, Bugsy Siegel, and Daeida Wilcox, founders of Hollywood.
