Although developer A.W. Ross never envisioned it as such, perhaps the biggest miracle to occur on his mile has been the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The museum’s collection includes a magnificent assemblage of more tan 110,000 works form all over the world, time-framed from ancient eras to the present day.
The museum was originally incorporated within the Museum of Science, History, and Art, but by the early 1960s the trustees and staff decided that the visual arts should be presented in an exclusive venue.
Mere than 1000 works make up one of the most acclaimed ancient and Islamic art collections in the US Exhibits spanning the seventh through the nineteenth centuries, from Central Asia to southern Spain, are mounted in the Ahmanson Gallery. Among the treasures are an alabaster eagle-headed deity from the palace of Ashurnasirpal II; the Egyptian bronze Sekhmet, and a part-human, part-animal dating from the 26th Dynasty.
