Details / Los Angeles Zoo
Los Angeles’ 75-acre zoo, opened in 1966 near the junction of the Golden State and Venture freeways, is home to more than 1300 mammals, birds, and reptiles representing 350 species, many of them on the rare and endangered list. An exquisite botanical garden is a bonus for flora and fauna loving visitors.
Monkeys and flamingos positioned near the zoo entrance set the mood for visitors. Follow the chirps and trills to a tree-filled walkthrough aviary. Alternatively, head straight for Tiger Falls, where you can admire the stripes, whickers, and very big jaws of big cats from a safe distance. The Koala House, filled with cuddly looking marsupials, is always a big hit.
The newest habitat is the Chimpanzees of Mahale Mountains exhibit, the first stage of the zoo’s Great Ape Forest. The one-acre habitat includes a 9100-square-foot forest, heated bedrooms, an indoor playroom, and an interactive play area for children.
