An unlikely looking anchor to the Playhouse District, this Northern Chinese Imperial-style palace was designed in 1924 by architects Mayberry, Marston, and Van Pelt. The building, constructed for art-lover Grace Nicholson, is on the National Register of Historic Places, which cites its 1920s Period Revival design. Today, the palace houses the Pacific Asia Museum, which is devoted exclusively to the arts and cultures of the Far East and the Pacific Basin.
The Pacific Asia Museum was established at the Treasure House in 1971 and has a permanent collection consisting of more than 17,000 pieces. Travelling exhibits are also on display. The research library has thousands of volumes on its shelves. A gift shop sells art books, children’s literature, cards, jewellery, textiles, and other items. The Family Free Days also offer special events such as children’s workshops, food-tasting, and music and dance performances.
