Details / UCLA
UCLA, formerly located on Vermont Avenue, was established n 1919 with an enrolment of 250 as a two-year college. The small facility grew quickly, and in 1929 the campus was shifted to purchased land in the up-and-coming Westwood community. Today, the world-renowned university boasts 419 lushly landscaped acres with more than 235 buildings and a student body numbering around 35,000.
As one of the country’s most prominent universities, UCLA has a lengthy list of renowned departments and schools, including film, medicine, law, theatre, earth and space sciences, chemistry, philosophy, history, and management. And athletes are highly revered as confirmed by the myriad Bruins’ sports team honours.
The real architectural standouts amid the diverse styles are the original four structures, glorious Italian Romanesque brick designs laid out around the grassy central quadrangle, itself always a hub of activity. Royce Hall, a campus architectural landmark, was constructed in 1929 and modelled by architect David Allison on a Milanese basilica. Named for philosopher Josiah Royce, the buildings hosts well-known performing artists in its 1,833-seat auditorium.
