Details / Museum of Contemporary Art of Miami
Locals refer to the new 23,000-square-foot showplace by its initials MoCA, and Miamians are especially fond of this already well-established museum, which opened in 1996.
Like Los Angeles’s original Temporary Contemporary, the main gallery has an appealing studio-warehouse look, the kind of space artists covet. The big room represents the major leagues, drawing work from far and wide; a smaller separate space generally exhibits the newest of the new, often from local artists.
Inside is contemporary fine art representing the world’s avant-garde movements, which occasionally includes the usual multimedia installations and photography that expand the definition of art. The mainstay of the collection are paintings and sculptures among modern art icons, Julian Schnabel is well represented.
