Details / The Miami Circle

Stand by the Tequesta Indian statue on the Brickell Avenue Bridge and gaze southeast to the Miami Circle, a 2000-year-old Indian ruin that is 38 feet in diameter; it was discovered in 1998 when an apartment building was razed.
The Circle contains 24 large holes and many smaller ones, all carved in limestone, and on the east is what appears to be a human eye. Archaeologists speculate that it was the site of a chief’s house or a village centre for an unknown tribe. From the 150,000 artefacts discovered at the site, including dolphin skull, pottery shards, shell tools, and exotic materials such as basaltic axes from Georgia, archaeologists believe it is the oldest structure in North America.
Application has been made for the Circle to become a National Historic Landmark and a feasibility study is being done to determine if it should become part of the Biscayne National Park.
