Details / Bishop Museum
The Bishop Museum is a must-see. Dedicated to the history of Hawaii and the Pacific, it was founded in 1889 by Charles Reed Bishop in memory of his wife, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last direct descendant of Kamehameha the Great.
Visited by more than a million people every year, it was originally devoted to the Hawaiian islands only, but is soon began to focus on the rest of the great ocean, eventually amassing the world’s finest collection of Pacific artwork with more than one million artefacts and 21 million animal specimens.
The museum also houses Hawaii’s only planetarium. Its Hawaiian Hall is dedicated to the history and natural sciences of Hawaii while the Polynesian Hall, is devoted to all the cultures of the Pacific.
