New York has long been America’s front door, welcoming millions of people form all over the world to new homes. Now the largest Northeast state in both area and population and long the nation’s chief commercial centre, New York fits the Empire State nickname given to it by George Washington.
The state of New York ranks third in population, with the New York City metropolitan area on e of the biggest on Earth, with more than 21 million people. While New York’s role as a commerce capital remains, its old industries face long term decline. The state works to attract new industry and to clean up its natural environments.
In New York City’s harbour, the Statue of Liberty stands as a beacon of freedom and an invitation to people everywhere. The Niagara River is known for its magnificent waterfalls along the New York- Ontario border. Known collectively as Niagara Falls, they are visited each year by roughly 12 million people.
