Details / Mormon Tabernacle
Next to the Salt Lake Temple, the most famous building of Temple Square is the egg-shaped, silver-domed Mormon Tabernacle, built between 1863 and 1867 as a house of worship and a place of assembly that could accommodate the church’s general conferences.
Noted for its fine acoustics, the building houses the giant Tabernacle Organ and the world-renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The original organ was designed by Joseph Ridges, an English carpenter, and constructed before the coming of the railroad.
Hearing the choir and organ in live performance is an experience not to be missed in Salt Lake City. Half-hour organ recitals are held Monday through Saturdays at noon and Sundays at 2 p.m. The performances in the tabernacle are free.
