Details / Salt Lake Temple
The majestic focal point of the Temple Square, the Salt Lake Temple is a cathedral-like building with six spires that took 40 years to complete. The temple is the most famous of more than 100 such structures maintained throughout the world by the Latter-day Saints. The entry is restricted to Latter-day Saints who have written recommends or passes from their bishops.
Mormon temples are not used for Sunday worship services, which take place instead in thousands of local chapels or meetinghouses. They are used on weekdays for sacred ordinances, or special ceremonies such as baptisms for the dead and marriages.
The Seagull Monument in front of the Assembly Hall honours the birds that Mormons believe were sent by God. Nearby is the bronze Handcart Monument, which honours the pioneers who made the journey to the Salt Lake Valley.
