Thanks to “save our heritage organization” half a dozen fine Victorian treasures that once stood in the way of downtown expansion have been spared demolition, restored to their original beauty, and moved to a place of merit. In Heritage Park they now house offices, retail shops, and a bed-and-breakfast inn.

Located between Old Town and Presidio Park, this 7.8-acre park offers a nostalgic journey through late 19^th century Americana. Temple Beth Israel, at the north end of the sloping hill, is one of the most prominent buildings in the park. Constructed in Classic Revival style, this was the first synagogue in Southern California; it opened for Rosh Hashanah celebrations in September 1889.
