Details / Maritime Museum
Founded in 1948 to preserve and honour the local seafaring heritage, the Maritime Museum blossomed with the 1958 acquisition of the Star of India windjammer, the world’s oldest sailing ship that still puts out to sea.
In 2004, the museum purchased the H.M.S. Surprise, a 179-foot full-rigged, 24-gun replica of an 18th century Royal Navy frigate that gained public recognition in the 2003 film Master and Commander. On board, guests can view artefacts, weapons, costumes, and props used in the film.
In addition to its permanent displays the Maritime Museum welcomes exhibits in a wide variety of media. Maritime Museum vessels also serve as venues for concerts and special events.
