Details / Salton Sea
Located in a scenic desert region in California’s south-eastern corner, the Salton Sea – covering a surface area of 376 square miles- is the state’s largest lake. One of the most important wetlands along the Pacific flyway, the sea attracts millions of birds – more than 400 species – annually, including great blue herons, burrowing owls, ospreys, ducks, terns, and endangered brown pelicans.
The lake also ranks among the most productive fisheries in the world and is filled with tilapia, corvine, sargo, and gulf croakers. No tides combined with the sea’s salinity render it one the country’s fastest lakes to boat upon. Fishing and boat launch facilities, three major areas for bird-watching, and more than 2,000 campsites are provided.
