Perched on wooded bluffs at the north end of La Jolla Shores, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography is one of the word’s oldest, largest, and most important centres of ocean science research and teaching.
The 170 acre campus boasts advanced research facilities, including a state of the art hydraulics lab with wind tunnels and wave channels, one of the globe’s best marine science libraries, and extensive collections of biological and geological specimens gleaned form oceans around the world.
Among ongoing research activities, Scripps scientists monitor seismic activity in an attempt to pinpoint earthquakes before they happen; develop new technologies and instruments for underwater research, such as laser based and sound imaging devices that can be used to explore the deep oceans.
