Details / Forbidden Gardens
For a time, America had two minuscule China attractions, neither of them close to a Chinatown: the infamous Chinese government-run Splendid China in Florida, and the relatively unheard of Forbidden Gardens in Texas. The second invites tourists to "Discover the mysteries of Imperial China," but the world's oldest nation has proved no match for the scorching sun and hothouse moisture of south Texas.
People visit Forbidden Gardens from all over the world, predominantly from China. It is told that the Chinese government makes travel within China so difficult that it is easier to fly to America and see a tiny replica than it is to stay home and see the authentic thing.
The attraction, constructed for an estimated $ 20 million, covers up 40 acres and 2,000 years of Chinese history. It is a inquisitive, remarkable, motionless place on the Texas flatlands, with its relaxing courtyard, shaded arcades, koi fish pond, the smell of incense in the thick air and the sounds of Chinese zither plucking from concealed speakers.
