Details / Kodachrome Basin State Park
Kodachrome Basin is a scenic little valley full of towering monolithic chimneys unlike anything else in the world. Its very name attests to its picturesque colour, yet because Kodachrome Basin is located off the main highway on the northern edge of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument , it receives fewer visitors.
Taking a hike to Shakespeare Arch helps introduce visors to the ecology of the desert. The small rock formation was discovered by the superintendent of Kodachrome Basin one afternoon while he was searching for a coyote den. The trail passes such typical plants as juniper, sagebrush, buffaloberry, Indian rice grass, false buckwheat and yucca.
The 24-unit campground, located in the midst of the rock spires and pinonjuniper forest, ranks among the best of its kind in the state, largely because each site is set so far from its neighbours.
