Details / Needles District
The Needles District is an amazing landscape of wind-carved sandstone forms and spires. Plan on spending a day or two here camping in their midst and hiking to Roadside Ruin, Cave Spring, or Pothole Point. Lovers of cowboy lore should visit the reconstructed line camp next to Cave Spring.
Few 4x4 drivers will ever forget an expedition over Elephant Hill, one of the wildest, roughest, most challenging stretches of road in the entire West. Narrow slots barely wide enough for a vehicle to get through; silver stairs of sheer rock, and steep inclines force off-roaders to put their machines in the lowest possible gear. At one point in the 10-mile loop, four-wheel-drives are forced to back to the edge of a steep cliff in order to make the turn.
