Peru, with an estimated population of 28 million, is a country in South America. It is bordered on the east by Brazil, on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the north by Colombia and Ecuador, on the southeast by Bolivia, and on the south by Chile.
Peru was home to the Norte Chico civilisation which is one of the oldest in the world, and to the Inca Empire which is one of the largest ancient states in South America. The Spanish conquered the region in the sixteenth century and established colonies. Peru achieved independence in 1821, Peru has experienced periods of political turmoil and financial crisis.
Peru is divided into 25 geographical regions. Country’s geography varies from the peaks of the Andes Mountains to the arid plains of the Pacific coast and the tropical forests of the Amazons. Its main economic activities include mining, manufacturing of products agriculture, and fishing.
Peru’s population is multiethnic, including Africans, Amerindians, Asians, and Europeans. Spanish is the main spoken language, even though a significant number of people speak native languages. This mixture of cultural traditions has resulted in a wide diversity of expressions in fields such a literature, music, cuisine, and art.
